Last Monday I was honored to collaborate with The Mama Circle‘s first DTLA Mama Mornings. The concept for this gathering is to bring new mama’s together in a comfortable environment where the ladies can mingle and bond over babies.
The Mama Circle team provides advice on breastfeeding, nutrition, sleep or any other challenges some of the mothers are experiencing. Being the first DTLA get together, it was going to kick off in style. Barrett from ValleyBrink Road catered the event with her delicious frittatas, Ergo Baby had some amazing give aways and I brought in a little craft table for the older babes, to give mama’s a chance to chit chat distraction free. I also curated my Mama Essentials table which will have a different focus for each gathering. The idea is to recommend products I love, with helpful tips I have picked up along the way. My first theme was Diapering and I want to share this for those of you who were unable to attend the event.

For those first few precious months your babes don’t need much, so we’re all told! This is especially true when it comes to skin care. New babes skin is super sensitive, I prefer to stay as close to natural as possible. I felt even the most gentle of wipes were too much for every wipe. My lil’ one went through 13 wet diapers one night!! In the beginning I save the wipes for big poop explosions when you just can’t get enough wipes… for everything else I try to use a soft cloth with water where I can. However, when you are on the go wipes are pretty necessary. These Water Wipes are really as close as it gets to water and cloth, I love them. I recommend buying a bunch of different wipes and trying them out on yourself before hand. See how they feel, how wet they are and how much residue they leave behind. And if you don’t know then you NEED to know. Get yourself wee wee pads for pets. They are your furnitures best friend. After all those explosions and accidents, keep these under for naked hang out sessions or diaper changes off the mat. I also loved bringing them in my diaper bag for car changes!!
I adore the smell of lavender and its calming, healing qualities. I like to make a lavender oil infused wipe solution. In a small bowl I add 1 drop of Lavender into hot water. Using organic cotton cloths I soak them and ring them out before placing them in a wipe warmer. These are really gentle and can be used all over your babes body. We still use this routine today at bed time with face washing. The calming scent and warm water sets the tone for bedtime. I prefer to use Young Living Essential Oils because they are safe to use directly on the skin with out diluting. However, for new babes it can be too strong so 1 drop is all you need in a cup of water!
For those of you who need something slightly more manageable, try Baby Bits. These organic pure plant based squares are made of 100% Vegetarian Ingredients: coconut oil glycerin soap, organic plantain & chickweed herbs, virgin olive oil, pure essential oil of tea tree and lavender. They can be used on the face as well as those cute lil tushies. There are two ways to make these wipes. I prefer to soak my dry cloths in solution and the place them in the warmer. Baby Bits suggest adding 3-4 cups of water with 3-4 Baby Bits directly into your warmer and storing your dry wipes next to it and dip your wipes as you go. Just remember no double dipping or you will contaminate your solution!!

Every babe is different, as if you didn’t already know! Same goes for diaper rashes, some get hit harder than others. I love using MotherLove diaper rash salve as a base treatment. It is made from 96% organic ingredients. Using this under a barrier helps sooth and heal the irritation. I then like to apply a barrier which acts as a thick waterproof type cream to repel the urine from contacting the skin. Jurlique is my favorite barrier as its hydrates and prevents moisture loss, it also contains lavender which smells divine and helps soothe and calm.
Baking soda is a great natural remedy for helping with a bad case of diaper rash. I prefer to use 2 teaspoons in a warm bath, sort of like a sitz. You can repeat this a couple times of day. Baking soda will alkaline the water/urine and help dry a sore raw bottom. However, if the rash seems really dry alternate with an Oatbath by Aveeno Baby to help soothe and prevent drying it out further.
We are all big fans of Honest diapers. The cute designs are so fun!! However, newborns are just precious I prefer to get as close as I can to cloth. I personally couldn’t commit to the idea of cloth as it seemed over whelming with the amount of diaper changes that first month. Bambo Nature are a dream come true. I suggest starting with these and one there skin has gotten used to the environments then you can switch it up to some cool designs by Honest.
I hope you found this helpful. I am really excited about the next mama essentials. Stay tuned.
